Google launches AI Chatbot to compete with ChatGPT

Google has started a group of users to test the chatbot called Bard before it is widely released in the near future.

Bard is built based on the  LaMDA language model  and competes directly with  ChatGPT,  which is causing fever in recent times. In a February 6 blog post, Google said the tool will be open to “a group of trusted testers” and will then roll out to the public in the next few weeks. Users can ask Bard to get detailed answers, like suggestions for what to cook for lunch, planning a date out.

“We’ll combine external review and internal testing to ensure Bard’s feedback meets the high standards of quality, safety, and authoritativeness of real-world information,” said Alphabet CEO. Sundar Pichai said.

Google was forced to launch Bard as the company faced challenges in the search business. Last week, Alphabet reported revenue that fell short of expectations as digital advertising fell, and investors worried AI rivals like  OpenAI ‘s ChatGPT  could upset online search. Late last year, Google issued a ” code red ” warning, prompting the company’s engineers to implement solutions to deal with ChatGPT.

“Soon, you’ll see AI- powered functionality  in Google Search that distills complex information and diverse perspectives into easy-to-understand formats. You can quickly understand the big picture and find more information on the web,” wrote Sundar Pichai. The company uses Bard as an example to simplify complex topics, like explaining new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb telescope to a 9-year-old child.

ChatGPT is different from Google Search

According to  CNBC , during a January meeting, Jeff Dean, Google’s chief AI officer, told employees that the company would face a lot of “reputational risk” if it provided false information. Therefore, Google needs to be “more cautious than a startup”. They need to rigorously test Bard before releasing it to the public.

Meanwhile, according to  Reuters , search service company Baidu (China) will complete internal testing of Ernie Bot tool in March. Ernie Bot is an artificial intelligence chatbot that works similar to ChatGPT and Bard. Baidu plans to deploy this AI as a standalone application, then gradually integrate it into its search service.

Microsoft, which is investing billions of dollars in ChatGPT, also announced that it will hold a big event on February 7, but did not disclose the main content. According to  The Verge , it is likely that the company will spend most of its time describing the process of integrating ChatGPT into the Bing search engine and strengthening its partnership with OpenAI.

Similarly, Google has also sent out invitations to a special event on February 8, discussing “using the power of AI to change the way users search, discover, and interact with information”.
